Postman Collection Runner results for a functional test suite, showing 216 passing assertions across API endpoints
Postman Collection Runner after a settled, all-passing functional run of the Fleet Logistics API — 216 of 216 assertions passing, zero failed — with the metric strip, result filters and per-assertion PASS cards.

Test for more than just a 200 OK

Response schema

Check that the body has the fields you expect, with the right types, on every response.

Field values

Assert on the actual values, not just that a field exists. A price should be positive; a returned ID should match the one you sent.

Error and edge cases

Send bad input, missing auth, and boundary values. A real test proves the endpoint fails the way it's supposed to.

Status codes

Confirm the endpoint returns a 200 when the request is good, and the right 4xx when it isn't.

See exactly what broke, and why

Point Postman AI at a collection and it writes assertions for every request, runs them, and tells you which endpoints failed and the likely cause.

Frequently asked questions about API functional testing

What is API functional testing?

Functional testing checks that a single API endpoint returns the correct response for a given input: the right status code, the right response schema, and the right field values. It answers one question per endpoint, does this behave the way it's supposed to?

What is the difference between functional and integration testing?

Functional testing validates that a single endpoint returns the correct response for a given input. Integration testing validates how multiple services interact. For example, that a POST to /orders correctly triggers an update in the /inventory service. You typically run functional tests first, then integration tests.

What is the difference between functional and contract testing?

Functional testing checks that an endpoint behaves correctly: right status, right fields, right values. Contract testing checks that the endpoint still matches its agreed spec, so a change doesn't break the teams that depend on it. Most teams do both, and Postman covers them from the same collection.

What makes a good functional test?

A good functional test checks more than a 200. It asserts the response schema, the specific field values, and how the endpoint handles bad input, missing auth, and boundary values, not just the happy path.

Can Postman be used for functional testing?

Yes. Postman collections let you write test scripts in JavaScript that run after each API request. These scripts check the response status, validate response schemas, and assert on specific field values. You can run them manually, in CI/CD via the Postman CLI, or on a schedule using Postman Monitors.

How is AI used in API functional testing?

Postman's agent mode reads your collection and generates test scripts covering common assertions (response status, schema checks, field validation) without you writing a line of code. You review and extend them; the AI handles the boilerplate.

Your own coding agent can do the same from the repo. Install the Postman CLI with npm install -g postman-cli, then run postman init to load the api-testing skill. From there, a coding agent like Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex can generate a collection, add functional assertions, and run the tests from the terminal—the same CLI your CI pipeline already uses.
