Senior Engineer - Team Lead.

SENIOR LEVELENGINEERING

Summary

The Senior Engineer / Team Lead is a Senior Engineer who also takes on the Team Lead role. As a Senior Engineer, they bring technical authority and play a key role in setting technical strategy for the team's area, a responsibility they share with any other Senior Engineers on the team. As a Team Lead, they take on a people-focused role, responsible for the growth, wellbeing and effectiveness of the engineers in their team.

Above all, the Team Lead acts as an enabler. They create clarity, remove blockers and support the growth of others, while keeping responsibility and accountability distributed across the team rather than centralising ownership or decision making. The Team Lead role is not a promotion and does not change an engineer's level.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Engineer

  • Technical strategy and authority: plays a key role in setting medium-to-long term technical strategy for the team's area and provides authority on technical aspects of the team's work. Where the team has more than one Senior Engineer, this is a shared responsibility, with technical decisions reached together.
  • Technical delivery: owns and delivers on the team's objectives. Autonomously defines and delivers technical specs and roadmaps for medium-to-long term projects, including those with cross-team dependencies.
  • Code fluency and quality: stays hands-on, writing code that is flexible, efficient, well documented and well tested, with appropriate use of manual and automated tests. Ensures high code quality through code reviews and can navigate and debug a large codebase.
  • Software and architecture design: designs components and systems that interact across API or system boundaries, with simplicity, separation of concerns, testability and maintainability as key considerations. Gives quality feedback on others' designs, knows when to refactor and when to leave things as they are, and rolls out (or deprecates) components and features reliably, with monitoring in place and failure paths understood and documented.
  • Mentorship: actively grows less-experienced engineers through guidance, review and setting a good example, and shares knowledge to support learning across the team.

As a Team Lead

  • People leadership: leads the people in the team day to day. Holds regular 1:1s (per sprint or week) to check in, discuss goals, coach team members through situations and work with them on performance; conducts 6-month check-ins and annual reviews with the support of their manager; approves leave (sick, annual, anniversary); and assists with hiring and ensures smooth onboarding of new team members.
  • Growth and team health: supports the growth, wellbeing and engagement of team members. Provides constructive feedback and guidance, stays aware of team morale, offers support proactively when people are struggling, and builds a team identity characterised by trust, commitment and respect.
  • Building relationships: builds strong, respectful relationships within the team and across functions. Facilitates collaboration with Product and Design to clarify goals and priorities, encourages inclusive discussions and balanced participation, helps resolve conflicts and helps the team reach alignment without becoming the sole decision maker.
  • Coordinating delivery: ensures the team is set up to deliver effectively, with clear priorities, realistic plans and minimal blockers. Maintains visibility of progress, risks and dependencies, coordinates with other teams to resolve dependencies, adjusts plans when priorities or constraints change, escalates when needed and ensures the team is represented at cross-team meetings.
  • Ways of working: ensures the team operates within an effective agile framework and that ceremonies (planning, stand-ups, retros and so on) happen and run effectively, without necessarily running them. Encourages good engineering practices and consistency in how the team works.

Skills and Experience

Eligibility

  • Working rights for Australia.
  • At least 6 months in your current position.

Required

  • Experience operating at Senior Software Engineer level, autonomously delivering medium-to-long term projects with business impact.
  • Strong code fluency in the team's primary languages, with a strong grasp of their idioms, patterns, tools and libraries.
  • Proven software and architecture design skills, including components interacting across API or system boundaries.
  • Experience leading technical projects end to end: specs, roadmaps, estimation and cross-team dependencies.
  • Experience mentoring and coaching engineers, and a genuine interest in developing people, culture and process skills alongside technical ones.
  • Experience working in agile teams in close partnership with Product and Design.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, including clear documentation in Confluence and GitHub.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with formal people processes such as 1:1s, performance check-ins, reviews and interviewing.
  • Experience driving cross-team or cross-discipline initiatives.
  • Experience rolling out major features or systems in a production SaaS environment.
  • Experience enabling AI-assisted or agentic software delivery.

Key Behaviours

  • Ownership: follows through on commitments and takes responsibility for their work and the work of the team. Proactively identifies and implements improvements, takes accountability for failures and helps the team learn from them, and has a bias towards action: tackles root causes, escalates appropriately and helps the team learn to unblock themselves.
  • Decision Making: consults the right stakeholders and balances detail with the big picture. Makes timely decisions without cutting corners that would compromise the quality of Learnosity's platform, and adjusts their approach to the medium-to-long term impact and risk, for example defining an iterative technical MVP while keeping sight of the long-term implementation.
  • Collaboration: is worthy of trust and leads by example. Builds relationships and drives coordination across teams and disciplines towards win-win outcomes, avoids blame, and commits to a group decision even when in disagreement. Offers help and knows when to ask for it.
  • Communication: proactively shares information so the right people are informed and aligned, tailors the message to the audience, and listens to understand. Is open to other people's ideas and promotes an inclusive meeting culture.
  • Team first: leaves ego aside and puts the team's success first. Empowers team members to make decisions rather than deferring everything to the lead, shares technical authority with other Senior Engineers, avoids becoming the centre of the team or its only point of contact, and supports an open and positive culture.
