CONTRACT

Apiculture Tutor
Location: Motueka - Nelson Region
Work type: Independent Contracting

About the engagement

Land Based Training is seeking an experienced and passionate Apiculture practitioner to provide training and assessment services for our Level 3 Apiculture programme on an independent contractor basis.

The engagement involves facilitating practical, hands-on learning experiences that support learners to develop essential beekeeping skills and industry knowledge.

The contractor will provide services to learners from diverse backgrounds, including youth, second-chance learners, and people seeking opportunities within land-based industries. This will involve fostering a safe, inclusive, and motivating learning environment that encourages participation, builds confidence, and supports successful learner outcomes.

The contractor will guide learners through the practical and theoretical components of the programme, including hive management, bee health, seasonal practices, and industry best practice. They will also support learners to complete their assessments and progress towards further study or employment opportunities.

This engagement provides a valuable opportunity to contribute to the development of future beekeepers and support pathways into the apiculture industry. Learners at Land Based Training and NZMA complete their studies equipped with the skills and knowledge to progress to higher levels of education and enter the workforce.

Scope of services

The contractor will be engaged to:

  • Deliver and assess learners in the Level 3 Apiculture programme, including its practical and theoretical components
  • Plan, prepare, and facilitate engaging training sessions aligned with programme requirements and seasonal beekeeping practices
  • Deliver fortnightly workshops over the 40-week programme, comprising approximately 20 workshops, ensuring each session is well-prepared, structured, and aligned with programme outcomes
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date training records, assessment marking, and learner progress information in line with organisational requirements
  • Integrate literacy and numeracy unit standards into programme delivery and support learners to meet the required benchmarks
  • Mentor and support learners towards successful qualification completion and industry readiness
  • Facilitate practical training in areas including hive management, bee health, and safe handling practices
  • Support learner work placements and liaise with industry stakeholders to help ensure the training remains relevant and aligned with industry needs
  • Ensure the services provided comply with NZQA requirements and internal quality assurance standards

Experience and expertise required

We are seeking a contractor who can demonstrate:

  • Previous experience in the apiculture industry, including practical beekeeping experience in areas such as hive management, bee health, seasonal management, and safe handling practices
  • A minimum Level 3 qualification in Apiculture or a related Primary Industries field
  • Sound knowledge of industry best practice, including bee health management such as American foulbrood awareness and control
  • A proven ability to mentor and engage youth and adult learners from diverse backgrounds
  • Experience in teaching or training, which is highly desirable but not essential
  • Strong literacy and numeracy skills, with the ability to support learners to achieve embedded unit standards
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Confidence working with diverse groups and maintaining learner motivation
  • A willingness to gain the Adult Literacy and Numeracy Education Level 5 qualification and Unit Standard 4098 if these are not already held. Support may be available to complete these requirements.
