Viridien (www.viridiengroup.com) is an advanced technology, digital and Earth data company that pushes the boundaries of science for a more prosperous and sustainable future. With our ingenuity, drive and deep curiosity we discover new insights, innovations, and solutions that efficiently and responsibly resolve complex natural resource, digital, energy transition and infrastructure challenges. Job Summary We are looking for a final-year Master’s student with a strong background in physics, mathematics, computer science, or machine learning. During this six-month internship, you will apply your analytical and problem-solving skills to develop, test, and refine advanced methods aimed at addressing real-world Earth imaging challenges. The world beneath our feet is incredibly complex, and it's also the source of natural resources fundamental to our society. At Viridien, we combine signal processing, wave propagation, numerical optimization and AI to develop and test high-end algorithms and workflows with geophysical or engineering content for our clients. You will have the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research on reservoir-oriented Full-Waveform Inversion (FWI). FWI is widely used at Viridien for velocity model building and seismic imaging in complex geological settings, enabling highly detailed, data-driven representations of the subsurface. While industrial applications have traditionally relied on acoustic modelling to reduce computational costs, the move towards elastic modelling enables FWI to capture elastic phenomena in seismic data. This enhances P-wave velocity model building and imaging beneath complex overburdens, while also providing S-wave velocity information that can help distinguish fluids such as water, oil and gas and monitor their movement during reservoir characterization. About the Team You will be working in the subsurface imaging R&D team, in close collaboration with our software and production departments, to meet their demands and industry trends. Our three R&D teams consist of passionate scientists with very diverse backgrounds including theoretical physics, engineering, as well as seismic exploration geophysics. We are all committed to supporting the Imaging teams on the delivery of the projects and to developing new technologies that will strengthen Viridien’s technical leadership on our competitive market. Key Responsibilities Investigate the potential of using neural networks to incorporate petrophysical information for guiding full-waveform inversion (FWI) from both methodology and development perspectives. Develop a neural network model to map petrophysical parameters (porosity, lithology, saturation) to elastic parameters (Vp, Vs, density, …) Integrate the neural network mapping into the FWI framework, allowing the inversion to be guided by petrophysical information undefined Qualifications Required Last year of Masters degree in any of the following disciplines: Mathematics, Physics, Computer science, Artificial intelligence, Data science, Natural Sciences with a Mathematics/Physics specialization Solid understanding of machine learning algorithms and neural network architecture Excellent coding skills with one or more programming languages, such as Python, C/C++, CUDA, FORTRAN Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills Fluent English (read, written, spoken) Preferred Knowledge of basic geophysical and wave-propagation modelling concepts Highly motivated and eager to learn Benefits An international culture in which the well-being and development of our employees are a top priority Access to company restaurant with subsidized price Access to benefits from Company works council Reimbursement of 50% of public transportation card in Ile-de-France region Attractive sustainable mobility incentive Love sports? Access to equipped Gym with reasonable price. Confidential employee assistance program to support our staff covering counselling, wellbeing, legal & financial issues. Our Hiring Process At Viridien, we are committed to delivering a respectful, inclusive, and transparent recruitment experience. Due to the high volume of applications we receive, we may not be able to provide individual feedback to every applicant. Only candidates whose qualifications closely match the role criteria will be contacted for an interview. We do, however, aim to share personalized feedback with those who progress to the first round of interviews and beyond. We are also dedicated to ensuring that our hiring process accessible to all. If you require any reasonable adjustments to fully participate in the application or interview stages, please don’t hesitate to contact your recruiter directly. We see things differently. Diversity fuels our innovation, we value the unique ways in which we differ, and we are committed to equal employment opportunities for all professionals. Create a brighter future for yourself while taking on some of the world’s most complex geoscience challenges. Ready to join our team? Viridien (www.viridiengroup.com) is an advanced technology, digital and Earth data company that pushes the boundaries of science for a more prosperous and sustainable future. With our ingenuity, drive and deep curiosity we discover new insights, innovations, and solutions that efficiently and responsibly resolve complex natural resource, digital, energy transition and infrastructure challenges.
