A growing boutique tax and accounting firm serving individuals and small businesses, is seeking a Senior Tax Accountant / Senior Tax Preparer to join its team in Rochester, MN, with flexible hybrid options available. What You'll Do as the Senior Tax Accountant / Senior Tax Preparer:

  • Prepare and review federal and applicable state tax returns for individuals, partnerships, and S corporations.
  • Independently handle Forms 1040, 1065, and 1120S from initial preparation through completion.
  • Review returns completed by junior accountants and provide clear, constructive feedback.
  • Serve as a trusted point of contact for clients, answering questions and coordinating tax-related needs.
  • Manage multiple client engagements while maintaining accuracy and meeting filing deadlines.
  • Support tax planning conversations and identify opportunities to help clients make informed financial decisions.
  • Train and mentor less-experienced tax professionals, helping them strengthen their technical skills and confidence.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to improve workflows, maintain quality, and manage seasonal workloads.
  • Contribute ideas that support the firm's continued growth and professional development efforts.

Must-Haves as the Senior Tax Accountant / Senior Tax Preparer:

  • At least 5 years of substantial, hands-on tax preparation experience, ideally in public accounting or a tax-focused firm.
  • Strong experience preparing Forms 1040, 1065, and 1120S.
  • Ability to independently complete individual and business tax returns with limited oversight.
  • Experience reviewing tax returns and identifying errors or needed adjustments.
  • Solid understanding of federal and applicable state individual and business taxation.
  • Ability to manage multiple engagements, priorities, and client deadlines.
  • Strong client communication and relationship management skills.
  • Willingness to coach and support junior tax professionals.
  • Comfort with the extended hours associated with peak tax season.
  • Ability to meet agreed onsite expectations in Rochester, MN.

Nice-to-Haves as the Senior Tax Accountant / Senior Tax Preparer:

  • CPA or Enrolled Agent (EA) designation.
  • 10+ years of tax preparation and review experience, particularly for candidates without a CPA or EA.
  • Experience supervising, training, or mentoring junior accountants.
  • Ownership of an established portfolio of individual and business tax clients.
  • Experience with quarterly tax planning, consulting, or advisory services.
  • Background with a local, regional, or national public accounting firm.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related advanced education.
  • Interest in growing into additional technical or team leadership responsibilities.

The Company Offers:

  • Competitive base compensation generally ranging from $90,000-$125,000+, depending on experience and qualifications.
  • Flexibility to consider higher compensation for exceptional candidates.
  • Potential bonus or performance-based compensation, subject to confirmation.
  • A four-day office schedule, Monday through Thursday, during much of the May-December off season.
  • Hybrid flexibility, generally 2-3 onsite days per week during busy season and 1-2 onsite days per week during the off season.
  • Retirement plan.
  • Life insurance and long-term disability insurance.
  • Paid time off and applicable paid sick/safe time.
  • Complimentary personal tax preparation.
  • Discounted tax preparation for friends and family.
  • Potential healthcare stipend or additional compensation to help offset individual coverage costs, subject to agreement.
  • A collaborative, tax-focused environment without audit or assurance assignments.
  • Direct client relationships, professional autonomy, and opportunities to mentor junior staff.
  • Potential for expanded leadership responsibilities as the firm grows.
