Director of Membership.

FULL TIMEREMOTELEADERSHIPPEOPLE & OPS$60K–65K/MO

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director of Membership based in the United States.

Join a collaborative association management team in a leadership role focused on strengthening membership engagement, recruitment, and retention for a professional nonprofit organization. As Director of Membership, you will oversee membership programs, optimize administrative processes, and ensure members receive accurate, timely, and responsive service throughout their membership journey. You will work closely with association leadership, committee representatives, and internal team members to implement strategic initiatives and improve the overall member experience. The role combines membership development, database management, financial administration, reporting, and operational process improvement. You will also help maintain membership technology systems, develop standard operating procedures, and support chapter relations and organizational meetings. This predominantly remote opportunity is ideal for a highly organized, detail-oriented professional who enjoys balancing strategic priorities with hands-on execution in a deadline-driven environment.

Accountabilities

    • Lead the development, implementation, and management of membership recruitment and retention programs in alignment with organizational strategic priorities and guidance from association leadership.

    • Oversee the membership application process, coordinate application processing, identify incomplete submissions, and ensure applications are handled accurately and promptly.

    • Manage membership dues administration, including monthly billing, payment reminders, special invoices, invoice adjustments, open invoice reports, and membership termination for non-payment.

    • Monitor membership records and database accuracy, identify account synchronization issues, investigate discrepancies, and coordinate improvements to reporting systems and user experience.

    • Administer the association management system (AMS), troubleshoot database issues, and work with the software provider to identify and implement effective solutions.

    • Manage the organization's membership website, make routine updates, and coordinate more complex changes with the external webmaster.

    • Prepare and distribute monthly membership reports, retention statistics, committee vetting reports, enhanced chapter reports, membership card reports, and reports for mid-year and annual meetings.

    • Support chapter relations by coordinating membership-related communications, reports, and administrative activities.

    • Develop, document, and maintain standard operating procedures for membership operations, dues invoicing, and related administrative functions.

    • Provide responsive customer service by assisting members through phone and email when additional support is needed.

    • Collaborate with association leadership and internal colleagues on board activities, committee meetings, certification-related functions, and other organizational priorities.

    • Maintain cross-training across relevant procedures and technology platforms to support operational continuity and team effectiveness.

    • Attend the organization's annual International Training Conference as required.

    • Requirements

      • At least 3 years of experience in association management or a closely related membership services environment.

      • A bachelor's degree is preferred but not required.

      • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize competing demands, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

      • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly when handling membership records, invoices, billing processes, and reporting.

      • Ability to manage a high volume of emails and member inquiries while maintaining timely, professional, and customer-focused communication.

      • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to identify database discrepancies, troubleshoot administrative issues, and coordinate practical solutions.

      • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Outlook, Word, and Excel.

      • Experience with MemberSuite or another association management system (AMS) is an advantage.

      • Excellent customer service skills and a commitment to creating a positive membership experience.

      • A collaborative, adaptable, and proactive working style, with the ability to work independently in a predominantly remote environment.

      • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with association leadership, committees, coordinators, and external service providers.

      • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds when required.

      • Willingness to attend the annual International Training Conference.

      • Benefits

        • Annual salary: $60,000–$65,000, depending on experience.

        • Healthcare coverage: Medical, dental, vision, and additional benefits.

        • Retirement savings: 401(k) plan with employer matching.

        • Paid time off: Generous PTO to support rest and work-life balance.

        • Flexible work arrangements: Predominantly remote work, with flexible and hybrid scheduling options where applicable.

        • Professional development: Opportunities to build expertise in association management, membership operations, and organizational processes.

        • Collaborative environment: The opportunity to work with a team focused on delivering meaningful member experiences and supporting professional associations.
