Do You Need Norwegian or Swedish for a Tech Job? (2026)

2026-09-23 · Petter Larsen

"Can I work in tech in Norway or Sweden if I only speak English?" It's one of the most common questions international developers ask about the two countries.

Yes, but Norway and Sweden are very different. We checked 5,244 tech job ads posted in 2026 (2,058 in Norway and 3,186 in Sweden) to see how many are open to English speakers.

How many tech jobs are open to English speakers?

  • Sweden: about half (49%) of tech job ads are English-friendly.
  • Norway: fewer than one in five (18.1%) are.

"English-friendly" means the ad is written in English and doesn't require the local language. How we measured it is at the end of the post.

Tech jobs in Sweden for English speakers: half the market is open

53.2% of Swedish tech ads are written in English, and only 8% of those still ask for Swedish. That leaves 49% of all tech ads that are realistic for English speakers.

English is a requirement in its own right, too: 32.7% of Swedish tech ads explicitly ask for good English, often next to Swedish ("svenska och engelska i tal och skrift").

English-friendly tech job ads in Sweden by role, 2026

Software developer (general)1,14248.6%
Embedded / hardware35942.9%
Backend / full-stack developer53441.4%
IT operations / support3511.4%

Data, AI and ML roles are the most open, followed by DevOps and platform work. Backend and full-stack roles are a bit less open (41.4%), but there are a lot of them. IT support is almost always in Swedish, since it's user-facing work.

Startups are the most open of all: 93.4% of the 106 Swedish startup tech ads in our data are English-friendly, against 47.4% for other employers.

Tech jobs in Norway without Norwegian: possible, but pick your employer

79% of Norwegian tech ads are written in Norwegian, and 43.9% of all tech ads explicitly ask for Norwegian. Of the ads written in English, 12.4% still require it. That leaves 18.1%, roughly one in five tech ads, that are realistic without Norwegian.

* Small samples (under 50 ads), so treat these as indications only.

Most developer roles sit at 17-22%, so unlike in Sweden, there's no mainstream role that's clearly "the English one". Embedded and hardware look more open, but the sample is small. IT support and operations are almost always in Norwegian.

In Norway, which company you apply to matters more than which role. Startups are the exception: 83.3% of the 72 Norwegian startup tech ads are English-friendly, against 15.8% of other tech ads.

Security clearance and citizenship

The local language isn't the only thing that can rule you out:

  • Security clearance is mentioned in 21% of Norwegian and 13.1% of Swedish tech ads. In Norway it appears as sikkerhetsklarering, often with a level such as KONFIDENSIELT or HEMMELIG. In Sweden it's säkerhetsprövning or säkerhetsklass.
  • Citizenship is mentioned in 11.2% of Swedish tech ads (3.4% in Norway). Swedish roles placed in a security class can require Swedish citizenship. In Norway, it's mostly defence and intelligence roles.

Not every mention is a hard requirement. Many consultancies write that "some customers may require clearance", but in defence and some government roles it's firm. Clearance is based on a background check, so it can take longer, or be harder, if you've only recently moved to the country. If you're not eligible, filter these roles out early.

Should you learn Norwegian or Swedish?

If you plan to stay long-term, yes. It opens up the other half of the Swedish market and most of the Norwegian one. A few practical notes from the ads:

  • Some ads specify a level. Norwegian public-sector and university ads sometimes ask for B2, and some give new employees a few years to reach it.
  • "A Scandinavian language" is sometimes enough. Some Norwegian ads accept any Scandinavian language, so Swedish and Danish speakers can often work in Norway without learning Norwegian first.
  • Start early, even if the job is in English. Meetings, lunch conversations and company-wide emails are often in the local language, even in English-speaking teams.

Startup jobs: the easiest way in

For international developers, startups are often the easiest way into the Norwegian and Swedish tech job markets. As the numbers above show, they're by far the most English-friendly employers in both countries. They're also a good fit for newcomers in other ways:

  • They hire internationally. Many startups recruit across Europe and beyond, and care more about what you can build than about a local network or a local degree.
  • They work in English. Mixed-nationality teams usually make English the working language, in meetings and in code.
  • Many sponsor work permits. Both Norway and Sweden set salary requirements for skilled-worker permits. Many startups are willing to pay at that level and handle the paperwork, so ask about sponsorship early.

Need a visa? Start remote, then relocate

If you need a work permit, a proven route is to start working for a Norwegian or Swedish company remotely from your home country:

  1. Find a remote part-time, freelance or consultant role with a Norwegian or Swedish company. Startups are usually the most open to this.
  2. Show what you can do. Deliver good work and get to know the team.
  3. Turn it into a full-time offer. Once the company knows and trusts you, hiring you full-time and sponsoring your permit is a much smaller step than hiring an unknown applicant from abroad.

It lowers the risk for both sides: the company already knows your work, and you know the team before you move. Browse remote tech jobs in Norway and Sweden.

How to find English-speaking tech jobs faster

  1. Use English-only listings. Every job in our English-speaking listings is written in English, and new listings are checked for whether the local language is actually required.
  2. Target the most open roles and employers. In Sweden: data, AI, DevOps and frontend. In both countries: startups.
  3. Filter out clearance and citizenship roles early if you're not eligible.
  4. Look for visa sponsorship if you're coming from outside the EU/EEA: visa sponsorship jobs in Norway and in Sweden.

How we measured it

  • Data: tech job ads collected by Nordic Tech Jobs from Norwegian and Swedish job boards (including startup job boards) between January and September 2026, with reposts counted once. See the Norway and Sweden posts for the full method.
  • Language of the ad: we detect which language each ad is written in.
  • Explicit requirement: we look for phrases such as "fluent in Norwegian", "flytende norsk", "svenska i tal och skrift" or "Swedish is required". Phrases like "Norwegian is an advantage" or "svenska är meriterande" don't count as a requirement.
  • Startups are ads from startup job boards, plus employers we identify as startups.

An ad written in Norwegian or Swedish usually means the team works in that language, but not always. Treat the numbers as a good guide, not a hard rule.
