Most In-Demand Tech Skills in Norway (2026)
2026-09-17 · Petter Larsen
What do Norwegian employers ask for when they hire developers, data engineers and platform engineers? We counted every technology mentioned in 2,058 tech job ads posted in Norway in 2026.
Azure, Python, CI/CD and SQL come out on top. Norway is still a Microsoft-leaning market, and delivery skills like CI/CD, Git and Infrastructure as Code show up more often than most programming languages.

The 15 most in-demand tech skills in Norway (2026)
| # | Technology | Share of tech job ads |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Azure | 29.8% |
| 2 | Python | 24.7% |
| 3 | CI/CD | 21.3% |
| 4 | SQL | 20.9% |
| 5 | Git | 17.3% |
| 6 | Kubernetes | 15.1% |
| 7 | React | 15.1% |
| 8 | AWS | 13.2% |
| 9 | TypeScript | 13.0% |
| 10 | .NET | 12.6% |
| 11 | Java | 11.6% |
| 12 | Infrastructure as Code | 11.5% |
| 13 | Linux | 11.4% |
| 14 | C# | 11.4% |
| 15 | LLMs / generative AI | 10.4% |
Azure is Norway's default cloud
Azure is in 29.8% of Norwegian tech ads, more than twice as often as AWS (13.2%) and three times as often as Google Cloud (8.5%). The rest of the Microsoft stack follows: Microsoft 365 (9.2%), Entra ID / Azure AD (6%), Power BI (4.8%) and Intune (4.1%).
If you only know one cloud, Azure covers the most job ads in Norway, with AWS as a solid second. On your CV, name the services you've used (App Service, AKS, Functions, Azure SQL, Entra ID) rather than just writing "Azure".

Most in-demand programming languages in Norway
| Language / platform | Share of tech job ads |
|---|---|
| Python | 24.7% |
| TypeScript | 13.0% |
| .NET | 12.6% |
| Java | 11.6% |
| C# | 11.4% |
| JavaScript | 7.8% |
| Kotlin | 7.7% |
Python is the most requested language in Norway. It shows up in backend, data engineering, machine learning, automation and infrastructure roles, so give it a context on your CV: FastAPI or Django for backend, pandas, dbt or Databricks for data, scripting for platform work.
On the backend, .NET/C#, Java and Kotlin are close to each other, and no single stack dominates. Kotlin is in 7.7% of ads but Android in only 2.8%. In Norway, Kotlin is mostly a backend language, often next to Java and Spring Boot.

CI/CD, Git and Infrastructure as Code are expected
The biggest surprise in the data is how often delivery skills come up: CI/CD in 21.3% of ads, Git in 17.3%, Infrastructure as Code in 11.5% and Terraform in 9.3%. Many Norwegian teams expect developers to take their own code all the way to production.
If you've set up a pipeline in GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps, or written Terraform or Bicep, put it on your CV. Employers mention it more often than most programming languages. DevOps engineer jobs in Norway show what these roles look like.
SQL still matters
SQL is in 20.9% of tech ads, about as often as CI/CD. It's rarely the headline skill, but it sits next to almost every backend, data and platform stack. PostgreSQL (5.6%) and SQL Server (3.2%) are the most named databases.
Kubernetes is named more often than Docker
Kubernetes (15.1%) comes up far more often than Docker (9.4%). Containers are probably taken for granted, so ads name the platform instead of the tool. If you've used AKS, EKS or OpenShift, say so. See Kubernetes jobs in Norway.
React and TypeScript on the frontend
React is in 15.1% of ads and TypeScript in 13%, well ahead of plain JavaScript (7.8%), Angular (3.4%), Vue (2.6%) and Next.js (2.5%). A frontend CV for Norway should lead with React and TypeScript. Browse React jobs in Norway.
AI skills have gone mainstream
LLMs / generative AI are in 10.4% of tech ads and machine learning in 10.3%, which puts AI ahead of Docker and Google Cloud. It isn't only data scientist roles, either: developer ads ask for experience building on language models, RAG and AI agents too.

| Security | Entra ID / Azure AD 6%, Firewalls 4.5%, IAM 4.2%, Intune 4.1% |
| Mobile | Android 2.8%, iOS 2%, React Native 1.5% |
Ways of working are common too: DevOps as a practice (16.8%) and Agile (16.4%) each appear in about one in six ads.
Norwegian language and security clearance
Two non-technical requirements show up often. 43.9% of tech ads explicitly ask for Norwegian, and 79% are written in Norwegian. And 21% mention security clearance (sikkerhetsklarering), mostly in defence, the public sector and critical infrastructure. Both are covered in Do you need Norwegian or Swedish for a tech job?
How does 2026 compare with 2025?
In our 2025 edition, Python was also the most requested language, followed by JavaScript/TypeScript, C# and Java. This year we count more categories (cloud, DevOps tooling and AI) and measure against tech ads only, so the percentages aren't directly comparable. The ranking of the main languages has barely moved.
What to learn for a software developer job in Norway
Starting out: SQL, then Python or TypeScript, Git with a simple CI/CD pipeline (GitHub Actions is enough), and one cloud, preferably Azure.
Backend developer: one of .NET/C#, Java/Kotlin or Python, plus SQL, Kubernetes and a CI/CD tool. See backend developer jobs in Norway.
Frontend developer: React and TypeScript. Accessibility (universell utforming) is a nice extra in Norway. See frontend developer jobs in Norway.
Data: Python and SQL, plus Databricks, dbt or Power BI. Azure data services help. See data engineer jobs in Norway.
Platform or DevOps: Azure, Kubernetes, Terraform and CI/CD, plus Linux and some Python or PowerShell.
How we counted
- Data: 3,019 unique job ads posted in Norway from 16 February to September 2026, collected by Nordic Tech Jobs from Norwegian job boards, including startup job boards. Reposted ads are counted once.
- Tech ads only: we kept an ad if its title is a tech role (developer, engineer, architect, DevOps, data, security, IT and so on) or if it mentions at least two core technologies. That left 2,058 tech job ads.
- Counting: each technology is counted once per ad, whether the ad is in Norwegian or English. Percentages are shares of the 2,058 tech ads.
- Ways of working such as Agile and Scrum are left out of the ranking.
