FULL TIME

AECOM is seeking a mid-level Geologist/Hydrogeologist for our Phoenix, Arizona office. Candidates should have at least 2 years of relevant environmental consulting or related experience and a strong interest in field-based work. This role supports a variety of environmental investigation, assessment, and remediation projects throughout Arizona and the Southwest within a collaborative, safety-focused culture, with opportunities for professional growth.

The successful candidate will contribute to the execution of both routine and complex assessment, investigation, and remediation activities, supporting AECOM's commitment to technical excellence, innovation, and regulatory compliance.

The position includes a balance of field and office responsibilities. Candidates should demonstrate flexibility across diverse projects, a strong commitment to health and safety, and the ability to work both independently and within a collaborative team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct site characterization and remedial investigations of surface and subsurface impacts using data collected from soil borings, test pits, geophysical surveys, aquifer testing, and sampling of environmental media (soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, soil vapor, and air) for field screening and laboratory analysis.
  • Prepare soil boring logs, interpret vadose zone and groundwater characteristics, identify pathways to environmental receptors, prepare technical reports, and support the development of remedial action plans based on site investigation data.
  • Manage field sample chain-of-custody documentation, packaging, and shipment of environmental samples to analytical laboratories.
  • Oversee subcontractor field activities related to environmental investigation and remediation projects.
  • Support coordination of field activities including utility locating, surveying, drilling, and remediation field efforts under the direction of project managers.
  • Communicate effectively with project team members, subcontractors, and clients regarding field activities and changing site conditions.
  • Build experience toward professional licensure (e.g., Arizona PG) and/or Site Safety Officer certification.
  • Proactively recognize and appropriately address health and safety concerns affecting project teams.
  • Support quality assurance and quality control of assigned tasks and project deliverables.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Geochemistry, Soil Science, Geological Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related scientific discipline and 2 years of relevant experience, or demonstrated equivalency of education and experience.
    • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record, subject to a motor vehicle records check.
    • U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident.
    • Ability to travel and perform field work, including overnight travel as required by project needs.
    • Successful candidate will have to pass a background check.
    • Succesful candidate will be enrolled in a medical surveillence program after hire date.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Position is based in the Phoenix metropolitan area, with preference for candidates who reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the Phoenix office.
    • 3+ years of environmental investigation and remediation consulting experience.
    • Experience conducting environmental site assessments, site characterization, groundwater investigations, and remediation projects under Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) programs or similar state regulatory frameworks.
    • Experience supporting industrial, commercial, mining, energy, or federal environmental projects.
    • Knowledge of environmental sampling methods and experience using field equipment such as GPS units, PID/FID instruments, water quality meters, and electronic data collection systems.
    • Experience performing independent field work and overseeing subcontractors.
    • Strong technical writing, data management, and verbal communication skills.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and environmental data management software.
    • OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification (current or ability to obtain).
    • OSHA 10-Hour and/or 30-Hour Construction Safety training.
    • First Aid/CPR certification preferred.
    • Working knowledge of groundwater systems, hydrogeologic characterization, and environmental regulatory compliance.
