About the Opportunity

Communications & Photography Intern

David Zwirner is currently looking for a highly motivated Communications and Photography Intern to join our Internship Program at our London gallery.

Qualified candidates must be personable, organised, motivated, and responsible, with a strong interest in gaining hands-on experience across multiple departments of an art gallery. Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop is a mandatory requirement for this role, along with strong attention to detail and the ability to confidently operate a DSLR camera. Awareness and interest in top arts publications and journalists is also essential. Please read the specific department descriptions carefully before applying.

What you’ll do:

Press Tasks

  • Creating press clippings from online and print sources in a timely manner.
  • Logging weekly arts coverage in national newspapers.
  • Finding gallery and artist mentions and coverage in online and in print publications (using Google Alerts, etc), then flagging these with the Marketing and Communications Assistant.
  • Assisting the Marketing and Communications Assistant with the creation and consistent updating of press reports for internal and third-party exhibitions.
  • Sourcing relevant print publications from nearby newsagents, or purchasing online where necessary.
  • Researching publications and journalists for possible future profile/feature/review opportunities related to forthcoming David Zwirner London, and key third party exhibitions.
  • Assisting with marketing-communications initiatives, such as client book mailings and outreach to arts universities.
  • Assisting in creating image folders for media requests.
  • Sharing news of our events with local arts schools and universities.
  • Posting books or other packages as necessary to external PR clients and journalists as requested by the Marketing and Communications Assistant.
  • Assist when needed at press previews, artist book signings, tours/talks, and other related events, some of which will take place in the evening.
  • Assisting in the process of moving the press archive offsite (scan coverage, update spreadsheets, label and consolidate boxes of physical clippings ahead of shipment to storage).
  • Managing the online press clipping tracker.
  • Creating and maintaining detailed press reports for gallery and third-party exhibition.

Photo Tasks

  • Resizing, manipulating, and preparing images for server and database use.
  • Taking images with DSLR camera for social media or archival purposes.
  • Assisting with image editing and rendering creation.
  • Assisting with printing requests for sales purposes.
  • Updating artwork records with incoming imagery.
  • Providing AV documentation support during walkthroughs and event.

Archive, Library, and Book Tasks

  • Assisting the Front Desk Team with book inventory management, including occasional heavy lifting.
  • Supporting the maintenance, organisation, and inventory of the gallery library, with an emphasis on artist books, catalogues, and reference titles.
  • Assisting with research and acquisition of books and publications for upcoming exhibitions.
  • Packing and transporting books and archival materials to storage or other gallery locations.
  • Assisting with book displays, publication launches, and sales viewings.
  • Supporting David Zwirner Books with ongoing projects as required.

Please note that there are general/ad hoc intern tasks included in the role.

What we would like you to have:

  • Strong multi-tasking skills with the ability to prioritize and anticipate needs as well as organisational skills.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work cross-departmentally.
  • Passion for and knowledge of contemporary art.
  • The ability to confidently operate a DSLR camera.
  • Awareness and interest in top arts publications and journalists.

Please submit a resume and cover letter.

To ensure that our interns have a well-rounded and educational experience, we ask for a commitment of 6 months. Our gallery hours are 10AM – 6PM, Mondays through Fridays, with additional hours for occasional events and openings. Only qualified candidates will be contacted. Absolutely no calls or walk-ins, please. Eligibility to work in the UK is essential. The start date will be in early December.
