I.       Job Summary

Luther Seminary welcomes applications for a full-time, tenure-eligible faculty position in New Testament beginning July 1, 2027. Rank is open (assistant or associate preferred) and commensurate with experience. The successful candidate will join a team of biblical scholars at a seminary committed to effective and formative teaching, scholarly inquiry, and theological discourse that will equip the church for tomorrow’s challenges and opportunities. There is a strong preference that the successful candidate be an ordained minister or a candidate for ordained ministry in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America or a member church of the Lutheran World Federation.

II.    Essential Functions

Responsibilities include teaching a range of courses in the New Testament for learners in a variety of academic programs—MDiv, MA, ThM, PhD, and Graduate Certificates—as well as nondegree learners through digital and in-person ministries. Teaching duties will include survey-style courses, exegetical courses focusing on specific biblical books, biblical Greek, and electives in topics related to New Testament studies, biblical interpretation, and biblical preaching. These courses will be taught in various residential, online, and hybrid modalities. The ability to engage in effective online teaching and learning is required. Additional responsibilities include pursuing a lively research and writing agenda, advising students from a variety of Christian denominations in vocational preparation for professional ministry, contributing to the work of shared governance that belongs to the faculty as a whole, and participating in the collegial life of the community.

III.  Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess a PhD or ThD (or be ABD) in New Testament (or a related field) and a clear commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarship. They will also have a demonstrated commitment to nurturing the vitality of Christian communities and an interest in exploring the theological and ethical dimensions of biblical interpretation past, present, and future. The faculty of Luther Seminary embraces a generous Lutheran confessional witness with an ecumenical openness. All faculty place a priority on understanding how their work intersects with Lutheran traditions. Women, members of under-represented communities, and/or those fluent in Latin American, African, or Asian languages and cultures are strongly encouraged to apply.
