Are you looking for a way to volunteer with Hato Hone St John, but frontline ambulance work isn't for you?

We are looking for friendly, practical, non-clinical people to join our Major Incident Support Teams throughout New Zealand. As a MIST member, you will assist our ambulance crews and communities in a variety of ways depending on the situation. You might be helping to lift a patient, setting up at a music festival or providing support during anything from a local emergency to a national disaster. Whether it’s a planned event or an unexpected crisis, you will be part of the essential support crew working behind the scenes to keep ambulance operations running smoothly and making a real difference in your community.
Responsibilities – As a MIST member your key tasks may include, but are not limited to:
- Maintaining operational readiness of all MIST vehicles and equipment
- Safely relocating and operating support, command or specialist vehicles
- Responding to major incidents and events to undertake roles such as logistics, welfare, communications, safety or team leader
Training – All new MIST members complete an initial foundation course, which includes an induction to HHSJ, operational risk management principles and driving training. This ensures you are well-prepared to operate vehicles and equipment confidently and safely in emergency environments.

To thrive in this role, you’ll need to:
- Hold a current, full, and clean New Zealand Class 1 Driver's Licence
- Hold a First Aid certificate level 2 is preferred, but if you don’t currently have one, we’ll provide the training
- Attend at least one training session per month to maintain operational readiness
- Be ready to deploy within 30 minutes of activation (when availability has been indicated)
- Work effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Demonstrate strong communication skills and a keen eye for detail
- Maintain a good level of physical fitness
- Be at least 18 years of age
