About us Dyson is a global technology company driven by engineering, innovation and a passion for solving problems others ignore. We challenge convention to create market-leading products that are different and better, continuously refining ideas from concept through to mass production. Within our world-class Research, Design and Development (RDD) department, we identify and develop new technologies, working closely with NPI teams and technical specialists to integrate them into future products for global markets. We foster a culture of creativity, collaboration and bold thinking, where individuals are encouraged to challenge ideas, learn from mistakes and pursue better solutions. About the role We are seeking a Senior Aerodynamic Engineer to lead the aerodynamic development of next-generation Dyson Digital Motors. In this role, high-fidelity simulation and detailed flow-field analysis (CFD) are your primary tools to drive innovative, simulation-led design from concept to real product. You will shape aerodynamic performance from the very first stages, ensuring we make fast, confident, and informed design decisions. You’ll take ownership of identifying, evaluating, and advancing new aerodynamic opportunities, both through internal research and by partnering with top academic institutions. As part of a small, highly specialised aero-acoustic-thermal team, deep technical expertise, technical curiosity, and a proactive, solution-focused mindset are essential. You’ll push the limits of virtual analysis and compressor design, reducing development risk and timeline by ensuring early-stage simulation is robust, accurate, and actionable. Then, as designs mature, you will champion experimental validation, applying and developing advanced measurement techniques at ultra-small scales. Ensuring close alignment between simulation and real-world physics is critical to achieving Dyson’s uncompromising performance standards. This role is made for someone who thrives on engineering depth, enjoys solving complex, multi-physics problems, and is determined to set new standards in aerodynamic performance and motor design. Key responsibilities: Lead aerodynamics design and analysis of next-generation Dyson Digital Motors, using high-fidelity CFD and advanced modelling techniques to drive performance improvements from concept through to development. Design and optimise aero system across both early concept and detailed development stages, with a strong focus on system integration and overall product performance. Identify and develop innovative aerodynamic and aeroacoustic solutions, applying first-principles thinking and advanced analytical (Ansys CFD, PowerFlow, DNS, etc) and experimental methods to solve complex, multi-physics challenges. Translate research into practical engineering solutions, bridging the gap between early-stage discovery and product delivery to enable robust and scalable motor technologies. Own simulation-led design workflows, ensuring robust, accurate, and efficient virtual analysis that informs early-stage decision-making and reduces development risk and timelines. Develop, refine, and champion advanced experimental techniques, ensuring accurate capture of flow physics and acoustic behaviour at ultra-small scales. Analyse and interpret experimental and simulation data, translating findings into clear insights and actionable recommendations for engineering teams and senior stakeholders. Support technology transfer into product development, working closely with delivery teams to ensure robust, scalable implementation of research outcomes. Mentor and support junior engineers, sharing expertise, promoting best practices, and contributing to the growth of aerodynamic and aeroacoustics capability within the team. About you Technical A degree (or higher) in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. Strong grounding in aerodynamics (turbomachinery), aeroacoustics, and thermodynamics, with the ability to apply first-principles thinking to complex, multi-physics engineering problems. Proven experience in turbomachinery design and analysis, using industry-standard tools (e.g. Concepts NREC, ADT, NUMECA, ANSYS CFX/Fluent, PowerFLOW or equivalent). Demonstrated expertise in simulation-led design, including the application of high-fidelity CFD to inform early-stage decision-making and design optimisation. Strong capability in experimental methods, including pressure, temperature, and flow measurements, with experience in designing, executing, and leading rigorous experimental investigations. Ability to correlate simulation and experimental data, ensuring accurate representation of physical behaviour and driving continuous improvement in modelling approaches. Behavioural Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with high attention to detail and the ability to navigate complex engineering challenges. Effective collaborator, able to work seamlessly within multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated engineering solutions. Clear and confident communicator, capable of conveying complex technical information in a concise and structured manner to both technical peers and senior stakeholders. Proactive and innovation-driven mindset, with the ability to generate and implement creative solutions aligned with Dyson’s engineering principles. Adaptable and resilient, comfortable operating in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with evolving priorities. Strong planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple workstreams and deliver high-quality outputs under pressure. Demonstrated initiative and ownership, with a willingness to contribute to new technology areas or product categories when required. Experience in mentoring and developing engineers, particularly in best practices for simulation, experimentation, and turbomachinery design, is highly desirable. Benefits At Dyson, Reward goes beyond just salary and bonuses. Through a comprehensive package of Financial, Lifestyle, and Health Benefits, we provide support tailored to every stage of life and the moments that matter most. Working policy At Dyson, our vibrant campus culture is built on in-person collaboration, creativity, and shared learning. Working side by side not only fuels our innovation, but also creates a strong sense of belonging. To nurture this dynamic and inclusive environment, we do not offer a regular hybrid working arrangement. #LI-RK2 Dyson is an equal opportunity employer. We know that great minds don’t think alike, and it takes all kinds of minds to make our technology so unique. We welcome applications from all backgrounds and employment decisions are made without regard to race, colour, religion, national or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, protected veteran status or other any other dimension of diversity. At Dyson we are focused on solving the problems that others have ignored; solving them first using our technology and ingenuity. In order to achieve this we need to pioneer technologies that are different and authentic. This is the core of what we do and who we are. We must strive to create the future, every single day by developing new things, different things, things that go against the grain with a diverse and global team of ingenious minds. Dyson employs 14,000 people and is present in more than 80 countries. And while we are growing fast we want Dyson to remain a start-up in spirit with the freedom of experimentation and learning, constantly reinventing our products as well as reinventing how we work, how we sell and how we support our owners. At the same time we are working through the James Dyson Foundation, James Dyson Award and Dyson Institute to inspire future engineers and pioneering a new approach to engineering education. Underlining everything we do in this diverse environment is the need to always show respect, supporting each other as one team to overcome whatever challenges we encounter. We drive empowerment, development and equality in an inclusive environment for our people around the world. The future doesn’t just happen, we look to make it happen, to achieve leaps through pioneering new ideas.
