We work across borders, collaborate widely, and lead with purpose - always looking for ways to improve how we operate, support our people, and deliver results.

About the role
We are seeking a Senior Indirect Tax Advisor to join Group Tax on a 10-month parental leave contract beginning in January until the end of October 2027. As Ampol's most senior indirect tax role, you will operate independently and oversee significant BAS and excise compliance activities, while providing practical tax advice on GST and excise matters across the Group. This role is based in Sydney, with part-time arrangements and/or alternative locations considered for the right candidate.

Sydney | 10-month contract

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver tax compliance and reporting obligations within agreed timeframes, including GST, excise and other applicable returns.
  • Oversee the monthly GST returns, weekly excise return and broader BAS reporting process.
  • Provide technically accurate, practical tax advice aligned with Ampol’s commercial objectives and key business drivers.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in designated areas of taxation, with a strong focus on indirect tax.
  • Design and maintain Group Tax processes and procedures to manage tax risk and improve efficiency.
  • Own relationships with nominated internal stakeholders across Ampol’s business and corporate teams.
  • Manage agreed engagements with external advisers, auditors, revenue authorities and other stakeholders.
  • Contribute to Group Tax projects, strategies and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support the development of Tax Analysts by sharing knowledge and building team capability.
  • Use technology, including automation tools, to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of tax compliance activities.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Tertiary qualification in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Law.
  • CPA, CA, Master of Tax, Master of Law or another relevant postgraduate qualification is preferred, or progress towards one of these qualifications.
  • At least eight years’ experience in a tax-based role within a large organisation, accounting firm or legal firm.
  • Demonstrated expertise in GST is essential.
  • Excise experience in liquid fuels(or another excisable industry) is a plus.
  • Experience in a large commercial organisation is preferred.
  • Strong technical tax knowledge and advanced analytical capability.
  • Ability to translate complex tax requirements into practical, commercially focused advice.
  • Proven ability to prioritise competing work, manage projects and deliver to deadlines.
  • Excellent collaboration, stakeholder engagement, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.

Benefits

  • Our total remuneration is competitive and a bonus will be provided on completion of the contract.
  • We are flexible. Many of our teams have embraced hybrid work, balancing time spent remote working with time spent at an office to connect and work together where it adds value.
  • We value recognition. We have an internal recognition platform amplifying the achievements of those who do great work and demonstrate our capabilities and values.
  • Career development and learning opportunities including LinkedIn Learning and other tailored training solutions.
